Indian River Camping

I believe the Weather Curse has been broken!  Either that, or we must always bring the Webelos with us camping.  We are now 2 for 2 with the Webelos and no rain.

Ten Scouts and eight Webelos (including a guest Webelos from Pack 38), attended this trip.  Together with the Adult Leaders and the other Dads,  we had a total of 28 people in attendance.  Everybody pitched in and helped.  Once again the boys of the troop showed their true colors by including the Webelos in all they did.

We arrived Friday night with the wind blowing and the temperature falling.  The first order of business was to get the car port set up and then the tents.  Before we could build a fire, we needed  to hike over to the water source (at the Maintenance building).  When we arrived,  we discovered that the water had been turned off.  So back to camp we went thinking "Great!  Now we won't be able to build a fire tonight".  Well, since the bathrooms were open and with a little ingenuity, we were able to fill the water bottles and, yes, build a fire. With the tents up, car port up, hot chocolate and a fire, all was good.

Saturday was an event-filled day. The Scouts, Webelos, and most of the Adults took a hike around the scenic Indian Island Park.  It was about 5 miles on flat land.  While they were out and about, we set up three orienteering courses to challenge the younger Scouts and the Webelos.  After lunch (hot dogs cooked over the campfire), everyone learned how to use their compasses and attacked the orienteering courses.  All did exceptionally well.   For the remaining part of the afternoon, the Scouts collected extra wood for the night's fire while the Webelos played running bases.  For the Cooking Contest it was Scouts against Scouts (Chicken Cutlets Parmesan vs. the All-American Turkey Dinner).  The Chicken won for overall taste.  A job well done by both patrols.

Saturday evening was topped off with a great camp fire, the roasting of marshmallows, and some general relaxing.
